Frederick Nunley: I have been an artist of some sort ever since I can remember. I danced ballet as a kid, took photos and played mandolin as a teen and completed a degree in fine arts printmaking to round out my youth. I have survived HIV-AIDS the last couple of decades. Now I make treasures using all the ways I know; drawing with various tools, making relief prints of wood, ink and paper, building boxes and books are my current forms of expression. I delight in making things by hand and learning new techniques.
Steven Stichter: As a printmaker, I use traditional relief techniques--wood- and linoleum-block prints and letterpress--to depict the people and places around me, mostly in Washington DC and the Caribbean. As a quilter, I take an evolving, improvisational approach, typically using found and donated materials. In life and in art, I am drawn to the intersection of fields, ideas and techniques and, consequently, am exploring the integration of these various approaches to art--letterpress and images, printing and quilts. I am also an environmental planner active in my home neighborhood of Shaw, in Washington DC.
7 hands press history [Steven Stichter] I brought together the trio that comprises 7 hands press, so that I could have the opportunity of working with two enthusiastic, insightful artists: Monica and Frederick. In the summer of 2001, I first heard Monica read and embody her poetry at the No Ordinary Confluence event in Mt. Rainer MD. At the close of the event, I told her that I wanted to collaborate with her and to print her poetry. I met Frederick as a fellow member of the Triangle Artists Group, where his energy and persistence with his art are infectious. My experience with letterpress brought us together and our common love of language--spoken and written--has sustained us in the work. Through this, my first collaborative art project, I have learned not only how much time such work consumes, but also how rich that time is. This project [Seven Seasons of Sorrow and Loss] could not have developed had any one of us been missing, as each of us contributed skills, perspectives and stories that the others did not have. I also learned that my initial desire to work with, learn from and be involved with Monica and Frederick was a very, very good one.
